An Enduring 4 Years of Hell Has Ended
2nd of May marked my unofficial graduation as I finished my final examination in NUS. I may go back there to do a Master's degree next time but as of now, I am released. Rongjia asked me how I felt after my last paper. The truth is there was no exceptional hype but an acceptance of my status. I did feel like having a little celebration since the past 4 years had been tough for all of us. This bachelor degree is surely something earned through lots of pain and sorrow. I am sure all Chemical Engineering students will agree with me.
For me, the 4 years were particularly challenging and depressing. To be more precise, they were the worst years of my life. The only enjoyable time was during industrial attachment when I discover my self-worth. People said students lead a carefree life with just our academic results to worry. To a certain extent, I agree that we are able to have more freedom in arranging our time while working people will have more restrictions due to work commitment. However, we cannot actually compare the kind of stress because they are different in nature and that does not mean one is less than the other. Moreoever, we also have other things to worry about and not just studies. For me, I constantly worry about my sister who is mentally unwell. I worry about my parents' and grandma's health and also my parents' business performance. They had been losing money since 10 years ago. Only until last year then they started to make profits again. Small but reasonable. Fortunately, business was thriving in the earlier days and because of my parents' effective use of money, they were able to cover losses without going into serious trouble. That was why I graduate without any debt as my parents could afford to pay my school fees. For that, I am sincerely grateful to them. Sacrifices that parents made could never be repaid but they can be examples of how you can love your own children.
During these 4 years of despair, living in an extremely competitive environment, feeling so underachieved with all the people getting better grades than you, there is only one reason why I survive till today. It is dear, Karen, my girlfriend. She stood by me, consoled me, encouraged me, shared joy with me and bore pains with me. Life would be impossible without her. Her constant love and support gave me strength to carry on with my daily tasks and challenges. If one day she told me that she is an angel, it is definitely not hard to believe. She is the angel sent down by God, the Lord who loves me so much.
Also, very importantly, I must thank God for giving me such a great bunch of friends who supported one another during the tough moments. Life will be much more unbearable without you all. To my closest friends, Edmund, Rongjia, Vivien, Aidah ......, thank you all for everything and also may our friendship lasts forever!
The few achievements that I am proud of are:
1) Celebrating our 7th year anniversary this month. It has been a long ride but every year with dear is a new beginning, a new chapter of life.
2) Baptised as a Roman Catholic and become in full communion with God, the Father, Lord Jesus Christ, the son and the Holy Spirit.
3) Co-founded Climate Change Organisation and actively participated in activities that educate public about climate change and touch base with reputable corporations and goverment bodies. Really an extraordinary experience.
4) Other learning experiences like MLM, flea market and party planning that help me grow into a better person.
5) Unofficially graduated with an honours in Chemical Engineering. That means not letting my parents and grandmother down.
So now is the time to grab hold of this free time to fulfil some tasks like rearranging my room to make space for future stuff and other spiritual enhancement. This will be a good break before I step into a new world.
